Joe White, on a decade of using MindOut services

Service user, Joe, talks to us about how MindOut saved his life. “At this precise moment in time with lockdown, without MindOut I would probably be dead.”

When did you first hear about MindOut?

I’ve used MindOut’s services for a long time, since around 2010.

Which MindOut services have you used?

Peer support groups including Out of the Blue, the advocacy service and the online support service. They’ve been brilliant. I have so much respect for the staff at MindOut. I’m working towards getting well and sober and I’d eventually love to work alongside the team.

What would you say the main benefits of using MindOut services have been?

MindOut pick up the pieces where mainstream services fail. I’ve been suicidal in the past and MindOut has literally saved my life. Talking about feelings and supporting other people with their mental health challenges in the groups has been fantastic. I can’t thank them enough. The advocacy service also really helped me with my housing situation.

What has MindOut helped prevent?

If it wasn’t for MindOut I’m sure I’d be in prison right now. I was in jail back in 2014 and MindOut helped me then.

How do you think you would be feeling if MO wasn’t here?

At this precise moment in time with lockdown, without MindOut I would probably be dead.

What would you say to someone who is unsure about using MindOut’s services?

Try it, even if you’re very low and suicidal. Be you lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or queer, give it a go. I would recommend MindOut to anyone, they are an absolute godsend.
