Building solutions: 2006-2007
Mind launched the Building solutions campaign in October 2006.
Mind was concerned about how the environments we spend time in affect our mental health. Our 'Building solutions: environments for better mental health' campaign focused on two areas - mental healthcare environments and offices.
What we achieved:
-
A very well-attended parliamentary reception that raised the profile of the campaign with MPs, peers and other key decision makers.
-
National and local media coverage of the campaign and its launch.
-
Nationwide Building Society promoted the campaign to staff members at their annual Staff Event.
-
Susie Rabin, Campaigns Manager at Mind, was a keynote speaker at a University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) conference in Preston called A Showcase for Success: Sharing Good Practice in Design for Mental Healthcare Settings. Susie addressed the audience of architects and professionals from NHS Estates management on the recommendations of the ‘Building solutions’ campaign.
-
Mind has been working with the Department of Design at UCLan and have jointly put in a bid to develop 'the kite model of service user involvement', to be used when designing or refurbishing mental health services. The idea is to encourage health professionals, designers and architects to get a good spread of different ways of involving service users and for people to see where they should be focussing their efforts.
The ‘Building solutions’ campaign received significant interest and
support in Wales from both the NHS Estates Wales and the Design Commission for Wales:
-
Claire Bottomley, Policy Liaison Officer at Mind Cymru, met with Nigel Davies, Senior Architect and Assistant Director of Estate Development for Welsh Health Estates. Nigel is responsible for ensuring that patient privacy and dignity are accounted for in the context of the built environment of healthcare facilities in Wales.
-
The Building solutions reports and recommendations on the NHS Estates Wales website, which is accessed by all Welsh NHS Trusts. Nigel also assured Mind Cymru that all new proposals for development and re-provision of mental healthcare facilities in Wales undergo a rigorous system of consultation and quality control, already encompassing all of the recommendations made in the campaign report that focussed on mental healthcare environments.
-
The campaign reports and recommendations were widely circulated throughout key NHS Wales contacts, Unions and major employers in the principality. The campaign was also endorsed and supported by the College of Occupational Therapists in Wales.
Mind also worked directly with a number of Trusts including:
-
The Estates and Facilities department at South London and Maudsley NHS Trust are using the Building solutions report as the basis for all their environmental reviews.
-
Dacorum Mind worked with Hertfordshire Partnership NHS Trust who issued the Building solutions report to all their managers and architects and have assured Mind that all new buildings will embrace the principals outlined in the report.
Following campaigning by service users, the local PPI Forum and psychiatrists with assistance from the Mind Campaigns team, one Primary Care Trust reversed their decision to build a 2.5metre high metal security fence around their new mental health building and agreed that planting a dense hedge was a better way to improve patient privacy.

Ward Watch: 2004-2005
In 2004/05 Mind's Ward Watch campaign highlighted issues about hospital inpatient conditions, and fought for improvements. It was an incredibly successful campaign, with many groups from across England and Wales campaigning for changes in their areas.
What we achieved
-
At government level, Mind lobbied politicians and civil servants about the changes that were needed. Mind influenced positive developments such as improving hospital inspection arrangements, and better training for nurses.
-
Since the publication of the Ward Watch report, a number of other organisations have reported similar findings, showing that there continues to be a real need for improvements, as well as examples of good practice.
